"Smoking has a correlation of 0.4. So if you smoke a lot, it increases your age. Vegetable consumption, -0.3. Exercise, the correlation would be 0.1. So do you see? So vegetable intake has a much stronger effect. I mean, orders of magnitude stronger effect on GrimAge and these methylation blocks than, for example, exercise."
Horvath revealed shocking findings from the Women's Health Initiative showing vegetable intake (measured by blood carotenoid levels) correlates with epigenetic age almost as strongly as smoking but in the opposite direction. With a correlation of -0.3 versus only 0.1 for exercise, vegetable consumption showed orders of magnitude stronger anti-aging effects than physical activity on DNA methylation clocks. This contradicts popular assumptions about exercise primacy in longevity.
