In 1997 aboard the USS Hampton, a Los Angeles-class nuclear submarine, McGwier experienced what the crew called a 'fast walker'—an unidentified object moving faster than the speed of sound underwater without cavitation. He heard the loud racket and felt the submarine shake as the object passed. The crew refused to discuss it in his presence, suggesting classified knowledge of the phenomenon.
