"We map it out using Euclidean 3-dimensional Cartesian coordinate systems, right? They assume the datum of sea level to be parallel with the ocean floor. Then they take it into geodesy. They incorporate 7/6R. They fluctuate your ellipsoid as needed."
Sully argued that bathymetric ocean mapping begins with flat earth assumptions using Cartesian coordinates and Euclidean geometry, then post-processes the data onto a spherical model. He claimed this proves the underlying reality is flat. McToon countered that level surfaces are curves in geodesy and WGS84 is inherently an ellipsoid, not a flat datum, from the start of any calculation.
