"the week of, uh, June 14th, 2012, President Obama had signed a directive with Carzi, the president of Afghan at the time, that no bombs would be dropped in the villages anymore. So, no more bombs would be dropped."
A Marine Raider veteran recounts being told that, days before a June 2012 operation in Helmand province, then-US President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai had signed a directive stopping aerial bombs being dropped in villages. He describes the policy change as coinciding with his team being sent to support an Army Special Forces unit in what he calls a “bomb makers village”, where his unit later found itself surrounded after the Army team hit an IED and withdrew.
