What happened in this episode?

The episode follows a Marine Raider veteran’s account of Marine Special Operations Command assessment and selection (A&S) and an ensuing deployment to Helmand province, Afghanistan. He says the most surprising part of selection was how much he enjoyed its “big boy rules”, describing a culture with minimal micromanagement, neutral instructors, and instructions delivered largely via a whiteboard. He also recounts quitting alcohol after an earlier disciplinary incident, saying he then spent the next decade without drinking.

The conversation then centres on village stability operations (VSO), where he says his team was inserted into an “enemy village” for seven months and came under frequent attack, sometimes daily. He describes arriving as an advance party and witnessing an Afghan local policeman lose both legs above the knee within hours. He also discusses early adoption of drones and his attempt to develop a simple mental checklist for rapid decision-making under fire, later connecting it to the OODA loop and a breathing-led performance framework he teaches.

The most detailed combat account is a June 14, 2012 operation supporting an Army Special Forces team. The guest claims a contemporaneous Obama–Karzai directive barred bombs being dropped in villages, and he describes the mission deteriorating after the Army team hit an IED and withdrew, leaving his unit surrounded at dawn. He recounts a close-range engagement in which a teammate was shot through the neck and his captain was paralysed, followed by a high-risk run back to the compound under heavy fire and emergency treatment by a medic.

Marine Raider veteran recalls 2012 order barring bombs in Afghan villages

the week of, uh, June 14th, 2012, President Obama had signed a directive with Carzi, the president of Afghan at the time, that no bombs would be dropped in the villages anymore. So, no more bombs would be dropped.

A Marine Raider veteran recounts being told that, days before a June 2012 operation in Helmand province, then-US President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai had signed a directive stopping aerial bombs being dropped in villages. He describes the policy change as coinciding with his team being sent to support an Army Special Forces unit in what he calls a “bomb makers village”, where his unit later found itself surrounded after the Army team hit an IED and withdrew.

Guest describes Helmand firefight where teammate shot in neck, captain paralysed

within maybe 10 seconds, there was a bunch of machine gun fire that came towards the compound, my buddy Rick got shot through and through the neck, 762 round, and my captain got shot in the back immediately paralyzed from the chest down.

Describing a June 2012 operation in Helmand province, the guest says Taliban fighters closed in on the compound where part of his unit was positioned, prompting his teammates to open fire at close range. He recalls that a burst of machine-gun fire followed, wounding a fellow Marine through the neck and paralysing his captain after a gunshot to the back; he later describes a medic sealing the neck wound and reviving the injured man within minutes.
