"When they decided to do the study, hey, let's really determine this, they found that those taking the beta-carotene started dying faster and getting cancer faster than those on the placebo group. Maybe it's because you're not able to directly address the redox homeostasis, the dysregulation. You're just providing a bunch of antioxidants, but you could still be suffering from reductive stress in different areas."
LeBaron cited a cautionary study where smokers given beta-carotene supplements experienced increased mortality and cancer rates compared to placebo, despite the mechanistic rationale that antioxidants should neutralize smoking's oxidative stress. He used this to illustrate why conventional antioxidants can be harmful and why hydrogen's selectivity as a 'redox adaptogen' that only neutralizes hydroxyl radicals while preserving beneficial free radical signaling makes it fundamentally different.
