Coach John Wood Believes Gina Carano Will Fight Again, Explains Why Fighters Should Never Retire
"She went out and threw a kick right off the bat. And that wasn't the plan. I just think years and years of doing what she's done and then having all this time off, it happens. That was the one thing we didn't need to do was give her the legs and hips and that's it."
John Wood disclosed that Gina Carano deviated from the game plan in her 2025 fight against Ronda Rousey by throwing an early kick, which gave Rousey the opening for the armbar that ended the fight in 17 seconds. Wood explained that Carano's Muay Thai instincts kicked in after her long layoff, and they had trained specifically to avoid giving Rousey access to her legs and hips. The fight ended so quickly that Wood described it as "unfulfilling" for both the team and Carano.
