Woods and his partner experienced approximately five hours of missing time during their November 1977 encounter at Ellsworth Air Force Base. They were found miles from their assigned location behind New Lake Reservoir Dam with no tire tracks leading to their position. The FBI, state troopers, and military personnel conducted an extensive search involving approximately 11 people before locating them via radio triangulation.
