"My parents wanted me to be a professional. And I talk about in the book, my mother died feeling like I was a failure. She died in 1987 because for her, her son was a grocer. And for that, I was so downwardly mobile. I never graduated from college."
Mackey disclosed that his mother passed away in 1987 believing her son had failed in life because he became a grocer instead of pursuing a credentialed professional career as a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. Despite Whole Foods already being established, she viewed his lack of college degree and career choice as downward mobility, highlighting the tension between conventional success metrics and entrepreneurial purpose.
