"Monk mode justifies a retreat from your life. A retreat from risk-taking and adventure, and repackages it as self-development. It makes you feel noble in isolation, but it does that so effectively that it can become hard to bring yourself back out."
Drawing on personal experience including 2,000 days without alcohol and over 2,000 meditation sessions, Williamson warned that the popular self-improvement strategy of monk mode becomes dangerously addictive for introverted men. While effective for focused development, he observed many practitioners never reintegrate into society, mistaking perpetual isolation for virtue. He cited a friend whose bodybuilding competition justified years of social withdrawal that continued long after the event ended, and admitted struggling with reintegration himself.
