What was said

"the surprise for me was that of these 22 leaders there were only two who stepped down voluntarily Nelson Mandela the founding post-aparttheide leader of of South Africa He was I think in his 80s and he retired voluntarily as prime minister. Um then Lieuan Yu the founder of independent Singapore um served as prime minister might be as long as 30 might be as long as 40 years but he stepped down voluntarily."

Dr Jared Diamond says he compiled a list of 22 “outstanding political leaders” since the Second World War and found only two who voluntarily relinquished power. He names Nelson Mandela and Singapore’s founding leader Lee Kuan Yew, and says the others were assassinated, died by suicide, were voted out, or removed in coups.
