Smirnoff describes Soviet apartments having an always-on loudspeaker

What was said

"“In each each um apartment there would be a little speaker that would be on all the time so they could brainwash you.”"

Yakov Smirnoff recalls that when he was growing up in the Soviet Union, each apartment had a small loudspeaker that was on all the time broadcasting approved programming. He links it to the highly controlled entertainment environment he says existed, with only a small number of officially approved comedians appearing on radio and television.
