"I've had patients come into my office. They're, they sit in the chair, they're, they've, maybe they're on their 10th antidepressant and they're like, I went to my doctor and I asked him after seeing stuff online or talking to my family, I think I have ADHD. And the doctor will say, well, we can't even look at that until we get your anxiety and depression under control. Shut up."
Dr Sasha Hamdani says she has seen patients prescribed multiple antidepressants before clinicians consider an ADHD assessment, which she frames as a cycle of misdiagnosis. She criticises the practice of deferring ADHD evaluation until anxiety or depression is treated, arguing it can delay appropriate care when ADHD-related emotional dysregulation is the underlying issue.
