"Within two years, roughly 40% of people who were taking them for primary prevention and 25% of people on statins for secondary prevention end up stopping the medication. So to say that these negative attitudes towards statins are worrisome, I think is quite an understatement. It could have serious, even fatal consequences."

Erin Allmann Updyke says around 40% of primary-prevention statin users and 25% of secondary-prevention users stop within two years. She argues refusals and drop-offs are driven by factors such as practical barriers, fear of side-effects, mistrust in medicine and misinformation on social media.
