What happened in this episode?

Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-host Gary O’Reilly run a ‘Celebrities Ask Neil’ edition of StarTalk, fielding pre-recorded questions from film and television figures and using them as prompts for short science explanations and pop-culture detours. Tyson responds to Steven Spielberg’s question about the ‘gap’ inside an atom by describing the mostly empty space in matter and explaining why electrons do not collapse into the nucleus, leaning on wave–particle duality and the idea that electrons occupy ‘orbitals’ rather than planetary-style orbits.

Asked by TV writer Bill Prady whether the multiverse is real, Tyson argues that multiple universes can emerge from attempts to unify quantum physics with general relativity, while conceding that interaction with any multiverse remains uncertain. A later segment on food and genetic engineering ranges from everyday selective breeding to modern lab techniques; Tyson argues that engineered traits such as drought- or cold-resistance will become more necessary as crop yields suffer under climate change, and he mentions a fish-gene/tomato example he describes as controversial.

In a lighter science-meets-consumerism segment, Tyson says pink Himalayan salt gets its colour from iron-oxide impurities and contends that claims of superior health benefits are overstated. The episode also includes Tyson’s sceptical take on cinematic sound in space, and a speculative riff on what it would mean if aliens were already observing Earth without announcing themselves.

The episode contains a mid-roll advertisement for T-Mobile 5G home internet and a Patreon support appeal.

Tyson says pink Himalayan salt’s ‘healthier’ reputation is overstated

It comes from, Impurities in the pure crystal lattice of the salt molecule, which is sodium chloride. And in this case, the impurity is an iron oxide. Rust. So the diffusion— oh, okay, you want me to call it that? Okay.

Responding to a question about why Himalayan salt is pink, Neil deGrasse Tyson says the colour comes from trace impurities, specifically iron oxide, rather than anything intrinsically different about salt itself. He adds that while it may contain some iron, he believes the nutritional benefit is commonly exaggerated compared with other dietary sources.

Tyson predicts humanity would be ‘totally screwed’ if aliens are covertly here

at 36:50 · Attributed speaker claim
If aliens are here unannounced and they're observing us, it is because from wherever they came, there are more of them coming. And that is why they don't want to let us know that they are here, which means we are totally screwed.

In a segment prompted by a celebrity question about alien encounters, Neil deGrasse Tyson says he has not had one, then speculates about the implications if extraterrestrials were already present on Earth without announcing themselves. Tyson argues that covert observation would imply an intent to return in greater numbers and that any civilisation capable of reaching Earth would be technologically dominant.
