What happened in this episode?

Mike Ritland interviews former DEVGRU operator Rob O’Neill about selection (“Green Team”), early deployments, and aspects of SEAL Team 6 culture. O’Neill describes the screening and CQB emphasis, arguing some selection outcomes hinge on being a “grey man” and on instructor judgement rather than a fixed formula. He strongly criticises the use of the term “vanilla” for other SEALs, calling it degrading and saying operators should respect conventional forces and support personnel.

O’Neill recounts his first DEVGRU deployment to Jalalabad in 2005, where he says he learned “hearts and minds” meant spending money locally and employing locals, and that many armed Afghans were not necessarily insurgents. He describes the aftermath of the Operation Red Wings helicopter shootdown and the ensuing effort to reach the crash area and search for Marcus Luttrell and Matt Axelson, including heat exhaustion on the mountain and concerns that families at home would only know “a bunch of SEALs” had died.

He also says he believed at the time the aircraft was hit by a surface-to-air missile rather than an RPG, citing intelligence reporting and what other aircrew told him. Later, he recalls a note said to be from Luttrell arriving at a CIA-run safe house and an argument about whether it could be fake and how to handle a local source. The episode closes with O’Neill outlining subsequent Iraq deployments, the shift to slower “combat clearance” tactics, and a first firefight alongside an SBS operator.

Rob O’Neill says Red Wings rescue helo was believed hit by missiles

at 12:59 · Attributed speaker claim
Because Hilo got shot down. We were convinced they were surface-to-air missiles, not RPGs. I saw the guys actually— was it Turbine 34? So Turbine 33 got shot down, and I saw a couple guys from 34, and they were so shaken they actually landed on the wrong part of town.

Rob O’Neill recalls that after the Turbine 33 helicopter was shot down, he and others believed it was hit by surface-to-air missiles rather than RPGs. He says he later saw personnel from Turbine 34 who were shaken and landed in the wrong place.

O’Neill recounts dispute over Marcus Luttrell note at CIA-run safe house

at 16:33 · Attributed speaker claim
That’s when the guy came in with the note cuz we’re at the safe house was run with the CIA and that dude brought the note in from Marcus. And there was a weird conversation about well, this could be fake that like he didn’t cross the Ts in his name and we’re like yeah, but he got the social security number right, so it might be him.

O’Neill describes being at a CIA-run safe house in Afghanistan when a note said to be from SEAL Marcus Luttrell was delivered after the Red Wings firefight. He recalls internal disagreement over whether the note might be fake and says some personnel were reluctant to risk losing a local source, while others wanted to move immediately to verify and recover Luttrell.
