"New York State Governor Kathy Hochul on Tuesday signed an executive order barring the construction of new large-scale data centers using 50 megawatts or more of power for up to 1 year. She said, quote, we're in the midst of one of the most significant economic upheavals in generations, perhaps ever. These hyperscale AI data centers consume enormous amounts of power, truly threatening to outpace our grid's capacity."
Governor Kathy Hochul implemented a one-year moratorium on new large-scale AI data center construction in New York State, citing concerns about electrical grid capacity and costs to ratepayers. Shapiro frames this decision as aligning with foreign adversary interests and notes that 46% of New York respondents support the moratorium, characterizing it as part of a broader movement against technological innovation that he argues benefits China and Russia.
