Michigan Senator Gary Peters, who Stevens is running to replace, broke his previous commitment to remain neutral in the primary after polls showed progressive Abdul Elsad pulling even with establishment candidate Haley Stevens. Peters' endorsement announcement strategically emphasized Stevens' Obama-era auto bailout credentials. The race has become a proxy battle between Obama's implicit backing of Stevens versus Bernie Sanders' explicit endorsement of Elsad.
