The Trump administration orchestrated a direct intervention with FIFA to reverse a red card issued to a U.S. men's national soccer team player during World Cup competition. According to reporting in the Wall Street Journal, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Andrew Giuliani devised a strategy for presidential involvement, with Trump subsequently making a call to FIFA officials. The red card was issued by referee Raphael Claus, who had previously been investigated in Brazil regarding match-fixing allegations, though he was found not guilty.
