"Both parties have been captured by the extremes. You have MAGA on one side and you have basically that was remember we called them liberal, then it became progressive and now it's the DSA, the Democrat Socialist of America. The two parties have basically created this. They got a duopoly going. This is two businesses. And the best way to have a successful business is to be able to control the market."
Former Democratic Senator Joe Manchin argued that both major political parties have been overtaken by their extreme factions—MAGA Republicans and Democratic Socialists—creating a duopoly that shuts out independents and mainstream voters. Manchin criticized closed primaries in 17 states that disenfranchise 30 million independent voters and called for open primaries to produce more moderate candidates. He argued the parties prioritize power over people and that voter turnout in recent elections where Democratic socialists won was extremely low, ranging from 15 to 18 percent.
