In 1949, three US medical centers deliberately administered toxic gram-level doses of lithium chloride to heart patients as salt replacement, causing deaths that were published in JAMA and called accidental food poisoning by Time magazine. Dr. Nehls uncovered evidence this was a clinical trial to test lithium toxicity thresholds. The FDA used these deaths to ban lithium supplementation the same year, forcing 7UP to remove lithium from its formula and blocking what Nehls argues is an essential trace element needed for mental health.
