Joseph Matheny served as Robert Anton Wilson's driver and assistant in Santa Cruz during the 1990s, learning directly about Operation Mindfuck—the Discordian practice of creating unbelievable conspiracy stories and watching them spread. Wilson mentored Matheny during long car rides to speaking engagements. Matheny later applied these memetic warfare techniques to create Ong's Hat, the first alternate reality game, seeding fictional documents across early internet platforms.
