"I remember the coach calling and said, "Oh, you're running?" And I'm like, "I'm running." And he goes, "Yes, you're running." I cried because I didn't want to be responsible for any mishap in a relay."
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce recounts arriving at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka as a Jamaican relay “reserve” and privately hoping she would not be called upon. She says she cried when told she would run in the heats, later describing the experience as a turning point: she decided she wanted to compete in races where the outcome was “mine to lose” and “mine to win,” and changed her training and discipline ahead of 2008.
