"2 seconds before I impacted the ocean going 95% the speed of sound at almost sea level, about 695 mph, I yanked that ejection handle. The jet flew right in the ocean and just vaporized into nothing. What jacked me up so bad was impacting the sound barrier with my body."
An F-18 pilot speaking on the Shawn Ryan Show recalls ejecting at roughly 695 mph near sea level, saying he pulled the handle about two seconds before the jet hit the ocean. He says he could not recover from the dive after the aircraft entered the transonic region and a protection system overrode his control inputs. He adds that crossing the sound barrier caused his worst injuries.
