"In the 1960s, physicist Murray Gell-Mann was working on a branch of abstract algebra that had been developed in the 1830s for purely mathematical reasons. He noticed the symmetry in the equations and from that predicted that there had to be a particle that no one had ever seen. In 1964, an experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory found it existed exactly where he said it would be."
Physicist Murray Gell-Mann used mathematical group theory developed 130 years earlier to predict the existence and properties of the omega minus particle based purely on mathematical symmetry. The particle was subsequently confirmed at Brookhaven in 1964 exactly as predicted.
