Davina McCall speaks with Mint Velvet co-founder Liz Houghton about entrepreneurship, bereavement, and organ donation, with the bulk of the episode focused on the death of Houghton’s eldest son, Will, in a cycling collision while at university. Houghton recounts being collected by police and taken to hospital, where a consultant told the family the injuries were “unsurvivable”. She describes spending several days with Will before organ donation, and says he donated all eligible organs after a head injury left the rest of his body healthy.
Houghton explains how the transplant process is handled anonymously and says donor families may receive limited, non-identifying updates about recipients. She describes writing to recipients via the official system and receiving replies from two families, which prompted her to question why more recipients do not write. Houghton says she raised the issue with NHS Blood and Transplant and was told most donor families want feedback, but only a small minority receive it; she attributes this to fragmentation between NHSBT and individual transplant centres. She also outlines an initiative she refers to as “don’t forget the donor”, intended to encourage and support recipients to write.
The conversation also covers how her family sought counselling, her view that friends should not avoid mentioning a deceased child, and the Will Houghton Foundation, which supports youth-focused causes, including care leavers, through sponsored events organised by friends and family.
