Conor McGregor's Head Coach John Kavanagh on UFC Return, Sleeping in Gym, Staying Loyal During Lows
"I should have had the protective gear on on both guys from the start. The beginning of it was a little bit rushed. It was different when you're sparring for sparring and sparring for whatever they were embedded or countdown and it was it was a bit sort of haphazard and what we doing. It was my fault. I'm not going to beat around the bush on it."
Coach John Kavanagh took full responsibility for the training accident that forced Conor McGregor to withdraw from his scheduled fight with Michael Chandler. Kavanagh admitted the sparring session was rushed and lacked proper protective equipment because it was being filmed for embedded content. McGregor broke his toe in the first round after catching training partner Cian Cowley's elbow, but insisted on completing all five rounds despite the injury.

About this episode

John Kavanagh, head coach at SBG Ireland and Conor McGregor's longtime trainer, sits down with Ariel Helwani during UFC fight week in Las Vegas as McGregor prepares to return after five years away from competition to face Max Holloway at welterweight. In a revealing interview, Kavanagh takes full responsibility for the training injury that forced McGregor to withdraw from the Michael Chandler fight, admitting he failed to ensure proper protective equipment during a rushed sparring session being filmed for promotional content. The coach discloses that McGregor literally moved into a converted storage room at the gym starting around Christmas, sleeping there multiple nights per week for three to four months to maintain competitive focus. Kavanagh makes the striking claim that the past six months represent the most dedicated training period in McGregor's entire career spanning over two decades together. He identifies improved communication as the defining characteristic of this camp, contrasting it sharply with the communication breakdown during the Khabib Nurmagomedov preparation when they were "two ships in the night." Kavanagh explains how understanding a neurologist's assessment that McGregor possesses an unusually fast-processing brain helped the team work more effectively together. The coach confirms McGregor shows no physical limitations from his broken leg, has maintained excellent physical condition throughout his layoff, and reports feeling "like a ballerina" with no aches or pains despite intense training. Kavanagh also discusses his company's acquisition of the legendary MixedMartialArts.com website, his continued management work with Ceasar's MMA, and recent meetings with Scott Coker and Rich Chou about potential future collaboration.
