Building strength and muscle mass: optimize training & nutrition for longevity (AMA #71 rebroadcast)
"If you're comparing bottom to say middle quartile of muscle mass, you're talking about 2.3 hazard ratio, which means 130% increase in all-cause mortality. Smoking is about a 2.8 hazard ratio. When you look at low VO2 max to someone in the top 2 percentile, you're talking about a 5-fold difference in mortality."
Dr. Peter Attia reveals analysis showing muscle strength and cardiorespiratory fitness are among the strongest predictors of mortality, rivaling or exceeding traditional risk factors like smoking. Low grip strength correlates with a 16% increase in mortality for every 5-kilogram reduction, while low VO2 max shows a fivefold mortality difference compared to elite levels. These findings position muscle health as critical as smoking cessation for longevity.
