"California already has $1.4 trillion in public debt. The state has a reported $664 billion in unfunded pension liabilities. That number, by many estimates, is closer to $1.5 trillion. And then there's a retiree healthcare obligation deficit of $175 billion. You add this all up, there's somewhere around $1.5 to $2 trillion of incremental liabilities that the state has to come up with."
David Friedberg detailed California's looming fiscal crisis, revealing massive unaccounted liabilities beyond the official budget. The state budget has ballooned 65% since 2019 to $355 billion while facing an exodus of high earners who pay most taxes. Friedberg predicts California will face defaults so significant they could require federal bailouts, potentially threatening the union as red states refuse to fund blue state mismanagement.
