"I have seen parents when their kids go no contact, they've sent their kids a bill, itemized, pages and pages of invoices. This is what your— this cost. This is what that cost. One case, it was a person, they were distancing themselves. And it came from a lawyer's office in a very itemized way. All of it was broken down. Like it was like tuition costs, the health insurance that they had to carry when they were a kid, costs. They had every little thing detailed and like help to give them for a down payment, whatever. And there was the bill. And they said, You can work with our attorney's office on a low-interest payment plan."
Dr. Ramani disclosed an extreme case from her clinical practice where parents sent their adult child a multi-page itemized legal bill through an attorney's office after the child attempted to distance themselves. The bill included tuition, health insurance, and down payment assistance, with an offer to set up a low-interest payment plan. While unenforceable, the case illustrates how some parents use money as a transactional tool to control adult children.
