"Modally, my take is that we have sort of a couple of years, like 2 to 3 years up to sort of RSI, like superintelligence, not RSI. RSI is a process, as someone said, but superintelligence. And then I really hope that I'm wrong."
Geoffrey Irving, former chief scientist of the UK's AI Security Institute and DeepMind alignment researcher, estimates modal timeline to superintelligence at 2-3 years. Irving announced Sequint, a new organization focused on developing theoretical guarantees for AI alignment, premised on the belief that current empirical approaches are insufficient and alignment is not on track.
