Jocko Willink Reveals Why He Chose the SEAL Teams Over Delta Force
"There was a level of, hey, if you do something stupid, you you're gonna get your ass kicked and it doesn't matter how tough you are because there's there's 15 other guys that will kick your ass, so don't do anything stupid. Don't make the platoon look bad. Don't forget gear. Don't show up late. Like, all those basic things were enforced by physical uh threats of violence."
Former Navy SEAL Jocko Willink told Mike Ritland that when he arrived at SEAL Team One he experienced initiation-style hazing which, in his account, functioned as internal discipline backed by the threat of group violence. Willink argues it was intended to build camaraderie and deter behaviour that could endanger or embarrass the platoon, while acknowledging some hazing can become "stupid" or "sadistic" and fail to build unity.
