He disputes realist scholar John Mearsheimer’s reported comparison of the conflict to Vietnam and Afghanistan, arguing instead that a US departure from West Asia would, in his view, hasten the collapse of American global power, partly because of the strategic importance of the petrodollar.
Asked about Israel’s potential role and the risk of escalation, Sawhney says Israel’s ability to take on Iran alone is limited and “overstated”, and argues Israel is heavily dependent on US military power; he mentions reading a report about closer integration of Israeli and US militaries for West Asia. On whether Iran would strike Israel directly, he suggests Iran may avoid direct engagement for now, predicting that Hezbollah and Yemen’s Houthis could become more active against Israel if the conflict widens. He also characterises Donald Trump as inconsistent and uncertain in decision-making, while acknowledging that US choices will shape how long the conflict continues.
