In this 25-minute episode of Mike Drop, host Mike Ritland speaks with a Marine officer about advising Afghan forces in 2011 and later moving into reconnaissance and a Middle East posting as ISIS emerged. The guest says the advisory mission emphasised having Afghan units conduct the fighting while US teams focused on training, planning and reporting, supported by cultural preparation and scenario-based rehearsals that he found strikingly similar to conditions on the ground.

The episode closes with his account of deciding to leave the military to start a family, struggling initially to find civilian work, and recalibrating career goals after meeting a friend working in investment banking.
