Paul C Brunson hosts a roundtable with Lucy Spraggan, Jahméne Douglas and Miles Stephenson (Raxu) on their experiences of The X Factor and whether the franchise could return. Spraggan alleges that after her 2012 audition aired and her independently released album began climbing the charts, a lawyer demanded she take it down despite her saying she had not yet signed a contract; she says removing the album remains her biggest regret and claims a re-recorded copycat release appeared soon after. Spraggan also gives a detailed account of a night during the live shows in which she says a hotel porter later attempted to access her room with a key card; she says police were called and the man was later jailed, while the public was told she was “unwell”.
Douglas describes entering the show while his family were in witness protection linked to threats from his father, and says production used publicly available Crown Court information in a VT package without warning ahead of a live performance. He also recounts being portrayed as a “nervous wreck” despite suffering fever and food poisoning, and explains that a nervous laugh stemmed from earlier domestic abuse.
Stephenson says Raxu fought production over performing original music and describes post-show pressures, including a “roller coaster” period that included an overdose on Xanax, and a deal structure where costs were charged back to the band. The guests argue that any reboot would require far stronger safeguarding and a format adapted to social media-era exposure.
