Nathan Labenz interviews Woodson Martin, who became CEO of OutSystems in 2025 after the departure of founder Paulo Rosado. Martin positions OutSystems’ core value as an enterprise software abstraction layer that lets AI agents manipulate an application’s intent model rather than raw code, with deterministic generation intended to preserve security controls, reuse and compliance across deployments.
He describes enterprise AI readiness as less about uptime and more about governance requirements, citing customers with agentic systems stalled in “compliance backlog” while organisations assess issues such as training-data provenance, PII handling and auditable decision-making. On security, Martin argues there is “no finish line” and says platform standardisation can improve remediation speed versus a “wild west” of bespoke AI-built stacks.
Martin provides internal operational metrics, saying OutSystems’ product delivery accelerated from four major features in Q4 to 19 in Q1 and 26 in Q2 after heavier AI adoption, though he also says token spend peaked in June–July and later fell below forecasts after building an internal harness and a routing gateway to use cheaper models. He argues most enterprise workloads do not need frontier models and can often run on older or lower-cost alternatives.
He claims AI is changing backlogs, making legacy modernisation projects newly tractable and compressing some multi-year plans into months. Martin also says the company has launched an agent that recommends which agentic systems customers should build on top of existing applications and forecasts ROI.
