What happened in this episode?
Conan O’Brien opens with a listener message asking him to endorse naming an unborn child “Conan”, which he declines while recounting how his own name was chosen and later associated with Conan the Barbarian. Actor Owen Wilson then joins and talks through shared points of reference ranging from Boston roots to E.B. White, before describing being expelled for cheating in geometry and how that led to military school and, indirectly, to meeting Wes Anderson via a roommate connection at the University of Texas.
Wilson reflects on early ambitions in writing and advertising and discusses how chance and setbacks shaped his career trajectory. He recounts working around the press-junket circuit and offers a first-hand anecdote about being paired with Robin Williams for interviews on Night at the Museum, including Williams stepping in when a reporter raised a subject Wilson suggests he was meant to avoid. In a separate Hollywood-adjacent aside, Wilson claims his father wrote a notable “rich kids” speech delivered by Bill Murray in Rushmore.
The remainder of the episode is largely comedic riffing: cycling and exercise habits, O’Brien’s fondness for cowboy hats and the personas they trigger, childhood games and competitiveness, and brief talk about Wilson’s current projects (the Apple TV+ series Stick and Rolling Loud the movie). The show ends with a listener voicemail comparing O’Brien to Mr Burns from The Simpsons, which the hosts play out as character casting among the staff.
