What happened in this episode?
Area52 host speaks with actor and author Thomas Jane about his book on UAP folklore and experiencer narratives, before Jane gives a detailed, first-person account of an event he says occurred in 2011 during a period of insomnia and personal upheaval. Jane describes seeing a ‘ball of fuzz’ resolve into three flat, butterfly-like forms made of red and green ‘laser thread’, hovering for an extended period while producing rapidly changing geometric patterns. He says the forms appeared to react to his panic by backing away, and that after he mentally consented he felt the threads pass through his body before his consciousness faded; he says he woke the next day feeling like ‘somebody else’ and that the experience permanently disrupted his assumptions about reality.
Jane also discusses why he kept the incident private, saying he told only close family and learned quickly that disclosure could alienate others. Elsewhere, he recounts older UFO cases and offers speculation about a ‘watchguard’ function—suggesting, without evidence presented, that human and non-human actors may be limiting public access to transformative technologies.
The episode includes a long second-hand retelling of a South American story involving an allegedly injured ‘human-esque’ visitor during 2019 wildfires, including claims of blood testing that produced anomalous results (human DNA, female chromosomes, and unusual preservation). Jane additionally alleges NASA resisted conclusions from the Viking labelled release experiments on Mars, and cites a theory attributed to a Russian scientist about ball lightning’s potential for both energy and weaponisation.
