What happened in this episode?

In this short episode, Matt Fradd speaks with a guest who describes his first experience volunteering on a Catholic prison retreat in a maximum-security Texas state prison. The guest says he initially tried to avoid going because he was frightened and unfamiliar with prison culture, but changed his perspective after hearing that inmates told organisers they needed “the grace of Christ” as much as people outside. He recalls arriving at the prison, being asked to pray a lengthy deliverance prayer, and says organisers told him “the Satanist found out we were coming and they've been cursing us for a week,” a claim presented without evidence.

Inside, he describes the retreat format as unusually collaborative, saying inmates participated as leaders alongside “free worlders,” and that the atmosphere felt “normal” compared with his expectations. He also recounts helping source theological texts for an inmate assistant to the chaplain and says Ascension Press donated “tens of thousands” of books to be distributed throughout the prison system.

The conversation then shifts to corrections officers. The guest argues that guards face severe pressures, alleging a pattern of bribery and enforced silence in Texas prisons and describing how inmates can threaten or coerce staff using personal information. He says he read an article (which he attributes to Eve Tushnet) claiming corrections officers have particularly high suicide, divorce and addiction rates, and he recounts writing a letter to the Texas Department of Corrections that he says was published in a newsletter and prompted a call from a guard’s mother. He closes by reflecting that prison ministry changed how he views prisons, inmates and ministry, and says he avoids juvenile facilities because younger prisoners are “so cocky and… angry.”

Prison ministry volunteer alleges bribery and coercion pressures on Texas guards

at 7:46 · Attributed speaker claim
I think in Texas the stat is something like one out of four are take bribes and then two out of the four stay quiet and then one usually is just and does try to do the right thing and reports and stuff. But it's really hard when you're in a maximum security prison and someone says, "Hey guard, your wife's name is this. Your child's name is this, this, and this. I'm going to give you $500. You are going to give me whatever I want."

A guest on Matt Fradd’s Pints with Aquinas recounts volunteering on a Catholic retreat inside a maximum-security Texas state prison and describes what he says are systemic pressures on corrections officers. He claims guards are vulnerable to bribery and intimidation because inmates can gather personal information and offer money, and argues the situation is exacerbated by staffing and funding constraints.
