What happened in this episode?

Lex Fridman interviews retired UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in Russian, covering Nurmagomedov’s upbringing in Dagestan, the role of his late father and coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, and the training culture that produced multiple combat-sports champions. Nurmagomedov describes harsh early facilities as less important than coaching quality and intense internal competition, and he details a “fanatical” training ethos built around discipline and fear of losing.

He gives a first-person account of a turning point in his teens that pushed him towards combat Sambo and MMA, including the claim that his father originally wanted him to focus on freestyle wrestling or judo. Nurmagomedov also revisits the psychological dimension of his rivalry with Conor McGregor, crediting his father’s advice for helping him stay composed, and he discusses his final fight with Justin Gaethje, saying he privately knew it would be his last after an agreement with his mother following his father’s death.

Beyond his own career, he talks about coaching and leadership, praising Javier Mendez’s dedication and mental approach to camp preparation. He offers anecdotal sports history, including a recollection of Fedor Emelianenko appearing at a Dagestan combat Sambo event in 2004. The conversation ranges into football fandom and finishes with Nurmagomedov’s account of his Islamic faith as the organising principle of his daily life and a framework for handling success and grief.

And I was like, I thought, "I need this. I need this mixed style." I realized this was for me. I started going to my father's trainings, despite that he didn't let me. He didn't want me to do fighting. I think most people don't know this.

Khabib Nurmagomedov recalls that his father, the late coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, originally pushed him towards freestyle wrestling or judo rather than combat Sambo/MMA. He says he persisted with “mixed style” training anyway after realising the sport suited him.

Khabib calls Dana White “cold-blooded” in business and says UFC comes first

at 2:17:36 · Attributed speaker claim
He's very good at separating business from personal relationships. For him, the two never overlap. He draws a clear line between them. In business, he's extremely cold-blooded.

Nurmagomedov argues that UFC president Dana White’s success comes from rigidly separating personal relationships from business decisions. He says he understands the dynamic after running his own league and describes White as willing to make unpopular calls if they benefit the UFC.
