What happened in this episode?

Actors Dax Shepard and Monica Padman interview Lucas Gage, the 30-year-old actor known for his roles in White Lotus, Fargo, and the Netflix series You, in a remarkably candid conversation about mental health, sexuality, trauma, and Hollywood pressures. Gage reveals he was involuntarily committed to a psychiatric facility after suffering on-set breakdowns while filming Dead Boy Detectives, where he was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and placed on heavy medications. Shortly after his release, while still in what he describes as a manic state, he married a man he had known for only weeks in a ceremony filmed for the Kardashians reality show featuring a surprise performance by Shania Twain. The marriage quickly ended in divorce. Gage discusses facing years of queer-baiting accusations from online critics who believed he was straight and appropriating gay roles, when in fact he was closeted due to explicit warnings from Hollywood agents and executives that coming out would destroy his career and limit him to only gay roles. He explains this pressure was compounded by confusion about his sexuality stemming from childhood sexual abuse and growing up in the hyper-masculine military culture of San Diego. At 18, he was severely beaten by five men after defending a gay friend from a homophobic attack, suffering broken teeth, nose, and orbital bones requiring reconstructive surgery; the attackers faced no charges. Gage credits dialectical behavioral therapy, which he initially resented, for helping him manage BPD symptoms, reducing his emotional recovery time from months to seconds. He also describes his viral confrontation with a director who insulted his apartment during a Zoom audition, an incident that briefly made him a hero before conspiracy theories claimed he staged it. Throughout, Gage demonstrates striking self-awareness about his patterns of idealization, codependency, and self-abandonment, while expressing gratitude that Armchair Expert inspired him to seek help. He currently stars in the Netflix romcom Voicemails for Isabelle and begins filming a Prison Break reboot for Hulu.

I got jumped when I was 18. I got I got Paris Hiltoned. My friend got beat up for being gay. And I think there was maybe some part of me that was subconsciously I wasn't out or anything but I was protecting him and myself I think. And I jumped in and guys just beat the fuck out of me. Five guys against me. I like broke my teeth broke my nose broke my orbitals.

The actor describes being severely beaten by five assailants after defending his friend from a homophobic attack at a San Diego party. The assault resulted in broken teeth, nose, and orbital bones requiring hospitalization and reconstructive surgery. The attackers faced no legal consequences after claiming self-defense.

Actor reveals childhood sexual abuse influenced confusion about sexual orientation for years

at 37:17 · Attributed speaker claim
My first sexual experiences was being molested by a guy. So there was a lot of that wrapped up into it. Like so I really loved these girls. Like these girlfriends I had. I was like obsessed with them. And if any kind of thought like that would go through my mind I would justify it with like well I was molested though. That's like some residual trauma from that. So I think I don't know if I blacked out before that of having that that awareness but I really don't think I did.

Gage explains that being sexually abused by a male as a child created years of confusion about his sexuality, as he would attribute any same-sex attraction to trauma rather than his actual orientation. He says he genuinely had feelings for his girlfriends but used the abuse as an explanation to dismiss his attraction to men.

Lucas Gage reveals Hollywood pressure prevented him from coming out as gay early in career

at 43:47 · Attributed speaker claim
I think a lot of it came from Hollywood and the industry of being like, Do not come out because you're only going to play gay. You're only going to be seen as the gay guy. And that was true. It was. I think it's definitely still I mean look we have like Jonathan Bailey now who's everyone's in love with and rightfully so but like there is still resistance met with like can Lucas play a leading guy you know

Lucas Gage discusses the intense industry pressure he faced to remain closeted during his early acting career, explaining that agents and executives explicitly warned him coming out would limit him to only gay roles. He acknowledges this was factually true at the time and remains somewhat true today, noting casting directors still question whether openly gay actors can play leading romantic roles opposite women.

Actor confronted director who mocked his apartment during Zoom audition, video went viral

The director forgot to mute his microphone. So he's like with his wife or somebody. He's like Oh my god look at this poor actor and this shitty apartment. This tiny apartment with a TV and a bed and like the sofa in the same room as each other. And then I was just like Oh your your mic's still on. I was like I know that it's a shitty apartment but if you get me this job I'll get a better apartment.

During a COVID-era Zoom audition, Gage overheard the director insulting his small apartment and chose to confront him rather than pretend he hadn't heard. He posted the video online which went massively viral, briefly making him a hero for actors before conspiracy theories emerged claiming he staged it. He didn't get that role but landed White Lotus shortly after.

I was crying on set and they called my reps and they were like this kid keeps crying on set. Like is he okay. I was like in a cat prosthetic crying. The cat king. So I'm crying. Someone had called my people. My people were like What is wrong with you? And then I started crying with them and I was like No one loves me. I'm going to die alone. This this career doesn't matter. Nothing.

Gage reveals he suffered a severe mental health crisis while filming Dead Boy Detectives, crying repeatedly on set in costume until producers contacted his representatives. His agents then required he check into a mental health facility before they would allow him to audition again, where he was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

Lucas Gage married stranger after weeks on Kardashians show during manic episode

at 1:03:42 · Attributed speaker claim
I meet Chris. It's like this whirlwind romance. It's like moving at the speed of light. It's like every date is a string quartet. And yeah I think it was fun and it was really like that feeling that I was searching for so long. So when he proposed really early on I said Yeah. Couple weeks. A couple weeks. Yeah. And he's like We got to get married this weekend. I'm like What? No no. Like we I thought it was going to be like a long proposal. Just trust me on it. Big surprise.

Gage describes being recently released from a mental health facility and heavily medicated when he met a man and married him weeks later on the Kardashians reality show at a ceremony where Shania Twain performed. He acknowledges he was in a manic state and his family and friends were deeply concerned, but he dismissed their worries at the time.

White Lotus star credits dialectical behavioral therapy for managing borderline personality disorder symptoms

at 1:24:29 · Attributed speaker claim
I hated it so much doing it. It just feels like elementary weird work of like checking in with your senses and holding ice cubes if you're upset. But I do it in life now so I see the merit in it. I check myself and I'm like oh you're idolizing this person oh you're wanting to do that thing where they're your whole world and you're ready to drop everything. Instead of lashing out I'm like I check myself. The recovery time like before it would take me a couple months to realize I was being crazy. Then it went down to a week. Then it went down to a day. Then it went down to like I can check myself within like 30 seconds.

Despite initially resenting the treatment, Gage now credits DBT group therapy as the most valuable tool for managing his BPD symptoms, particularly the tendency to idealize people or react explosively. He describes dramatically reducing his recovery time from emotional episodes from months down to seconds through the techniques.
